OPPOSING OPINIONS
Title IX is still controversial today. However, the debate isn't whether or not women really are equal to men, it's whether or not Title IX is fair to men:
"A law designed to end discrimination against women is now causing discrimination against men."
-Jessica Gavora, Tilting the Playing Field
"This legislation.... has resulted in considerable collateral damage for young male athletes. Although not in the original legislation, the law has been enforced through the use of a rigid quota system This system has resulted in the loss of 400 men's programs since 1972."
-Joe Miragliuolo
While many agree with this, national statistics can prove the above theories incorrect. The number of men's sports programs hasn't increased as quickly as women's, but it still has been steadily rising. According to a recent article by sportswriter Jonathan Zimmerman, Title IX is being falsely blamed. His article states:
"At Rutgers, one of the slashed teams- men's tennis- had a budget of $175,000, which is roughly what the football team spent on hotel rooms- for its home games."
The schools decide to cut the teams, Title IX does not require it.
