CONTROVERSY
In 1972, the idea of Title IX and women gaining equality was very controversial. As Edith Green stated, "It was perfectly legal to discriminate in any education program against girls or women." Many Americans didn't notice this discrimination like Green did. Many agreed with Sandra Berenson's thoughts: "The great desire to win and the excitement of the game will make our women do sadly, unwomanly things." Edith Green, when writing and proposing Title IX, was very cautious with the law's publicity. She knew that keeping a low profile was best, to avoid opposition from people like Berenson. Green announced her ideas that would later become Title IX only when she was surrounded by her supporters, who she knew would help her ideas succeed, and did.
