IMMEDIATE REACTIONS
At first, not everyone was satisfied with Title IX. Complaints were filed, people around the nation protested, and schools struggled to comply. Some unwanted issues were commonly feared, and Senator Birch Bayh found himself reassuring that: "I do not read this as requiring integration of dormitories between the sexes, nor do I feel it mandates the desegregation of football fields. What we are trying to do is provide equal access for women and men students to the educational process and the extracurricular activities in a school." But many believed that if Title IX was enforced, men would have to give up their opportunities for women that were doing things against
their nature. One sportswriter, when discussing women's athletics said that the sports should make the women look "cute," and if they played men's sports...
"A girl just can't do those things and still be a lady."
Many others agreed. However, Title IX would not be repealed. With a large set of supporters in and out of Congress, Title IX was able to make its way around these protests.
